Photos of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Visit to North Borneo’s Danum Valley Rainforest

As part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration, the Duke of Cambridge and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton visited Danum Valley rainforest in Sabah, North Borneo.

Visits by the Royal Family is nothing new to Sabah as the state was formerly under the British rule and was once a popular getaways for the Royals.

Their visit to Danum Valley was recommended by Prince Charles, they had earlier flown by helicopter to the jungle – from Sabah’s capital, Kota Kinabalu; fondly known as Jesselton during its colonial days.

Danum Valley Conservation Area is a 438 square kilometres tract of relatively undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest in Sabah, Malaysia.

Here they had the chance to meet Royal Society scientists and volunteers, and to experience some of the jungle for themselves.

William is a Fellow of the British Royal Society, which runs a research station dedicated to studying the rainforest in the Danum Valley.

Their trip to Sabah is focused on rainforest conservation. Going to Danum will provide them with a unique insight into it and also the work of the Royal Society according to the British High Commission

They explored a rainforest that is 130 million years old and one of the last remaining bits of primeval tropical jungle left in the region.

The couple were dressed for hiking, both in khaki pants, long-sleeved safari-style shirts and thick boots. No delicate designer dresses for this visit.

They also had the opportunity to be lifted up, 45 metres, into a tree to view the jungle canopy and to also enjoy a jungle walk.

North Borneo Historical Society sincerely hoped that Prince William and Kate Middleton enjoyed their visit to this pristine rainforest.
